SCRA Eligibility: Common Questions

For the complete breakdown, see our full SCRA guide.

Who qualifies for SCRA protections? +

Active duty servicemembers, reservists and National Guard members called to federal active duty (Title 10 orders), and servicemembers deployed on qualifying orders. Reserve component soldiers within one year of returning from active duty also qualify. Guard and Reserve in civilian status are conditionally eligible — SCRA protections activate with your next federal activation.

What does the SCRA interest rate cap actually mean for my wallet? +

The SCRA caps interest rates at 6% APR on all pre-service debts during active duty. If you have a credit card at 21% APR with a $15,000 balance, invoking SCRA saves you approximately $2,250 per year in interest. Lenders are also required to forgive — not defer — the excess interest. This applies to mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, and personal loans taken out before entering service.

Does SCRA apply to National Guard and Reserve members? +

Yes — when activated on Title 10 federal orders, mobilization orders, ADOS orders, or deployment orders. Guard and Reserve members in civilian status or on drill weekends only (IDT) generally do not qualify for federal SCRA financial protections. This checker will show your current eligibility status. See our Reserve Component SCRA guide for the full breakdown.

How do I claim the SCRA interest rate cap from my lender? +

Send a written request + a copy of your orders to each lender. The SCRA requires lenders to reduce rates to 6% retroactively from the date of activation. The lender cannot raise the rate again during your active duty period. If a lender refuses, contact your unit JAG officer for a free legal assistance letter. See the lender letter template in our SCRA guide.

Is this SCRA eligibility checker free? +
